Ignorant prisoners

yoga poseCan any individual of us state with absolute assurance: ‘Absolutely nothing binds me. I am absolutely totally free’? Each as well as everyone of us is bound by the fetters of karma.

The three types of people

Our ancient bibles tell us of three different kinds of individuals: nityamukta, mukta and badha.

The nityamuktas are those honored spirits that are not subject to the legislation of fate. Its results can not touch them, for they have acquired the Lotus Feet of the Lord, they are the ever-free, the eternally-free, that are above and also beyond the cycle of birth and re-birth, above as well as past karma.

The muktas are the freed or emancipated souls, those that, with the elegance of God or the elegance of their Master, have done well in librating themselves from the bondage of karma.

The third type, badhas, are bound hearts like us that are still bound by the toils of their very own karma. Many of us, alas, are still in a state of ignorance about our very own condition.

Prisoners! Prisoners!

I remember an unforgettable night, when my Beloved Master, Sadhu Vaswani, was pacing up and also down on the balcony of Krishta Kunj, his house in Karachi. As he looked down the street below, he exclaimed ‘Prisoners! Detainees!’

I looked down as well, however I saw no detainees. I saw the website traffic, and I saw a variety of people who were going concerning their organisation. However there was no indication of prisoners!

Actually, Krishta Kunj was positioned near the Karachi Area Prison, and detainees would pass by your house from time to time, as they were led out by their wardens for labour routines, or gone along with by cops to appear in court. Yet on this celebration, there were no prisoners to be seen. Stunned, I said to him, ‘However Dada, I see no prisoners below!’

Sadhu Vaswani’s reply still mirrors in my ears. For long have I practiced meditation on the profound wisdom of his words to me that evening: ‘Prisoners, prisoners of desire are individuals,’ he said. ‘Alas, they know not of their chains!’

Are you aware?

Prisoners of desire are we all! We are bound by our very own delights and griefs. We are happy with just what the globe offers us, we take great delight in our pleasures as well as possessions.

We commemorate the birth of a child, and we mourn over his loss when he passes away. We weep for a while, and afterwards we beget extra children. We are not knowledgeable about the fetters that bind us!

Those of us who familiarize our bonds, make the effort to look for freedom. This state of awareness is called mumukshatwa, the need to achieve freedom. In this problem, our deep awareness is awakened as well as prompts us on the path of liberation.
